May I *extend* an invitation to you for dinner?
Could anyone explain *extend*?
Thanks |

It means, to put forward, offer. In other words, your sentence means "Would you like to come for dinner?" |

Addtionally, you can:
extend the hand of friendship;
extend an appology;
extend an offer (it would sound strange to say He offered an offer.)
"Extend" is a polite way to offer, and it implies that you will be happy if they accept, but you will not be offended if they refuse. |
