in front of + someone or something
before + someone rather than something

Is that right?

The first is correct.

I'm not sure about the second one, though. For example, you can be before the court, but sometimes "the court" is used to refer to the judge. You may be correct on this one, too.

I think you can use both with either a person, or a thing.
Two Years before the Mast , is the title of a well-known book, by Richard Henry Dana.
Before dinner.
Before next Sunday, and so on.
