Types of words include;
name (human, location)
acronym
blend word (portmanteau)
compound word
sound word (onomatopoeia)
loan word
Words like "how, you, a, impede, disappear, low" do not belong in the above groups. How do you call them? Root words? Affix-words? Are there any other kinds you can identify?
Thanks. |

Hey BMO,
I think that rather than all words having been classified in such a way, when a group of words share a particular trait, someone has come up with a word to define them. So for the remaining words, they would just be described by their parts of speech: noun, verb, conjunction, etc.
At the moment, the only addition I can think of is slang words. |

Thanks. I have been busy lately since I got my old IT responsibilities back after a 5-year hiatus. Lots of work to catch up.
Glad to be back and thanks again.

Hello BMO - I need a little advice
I'm interested in learning how to write web pages - but there are so many types of programs I'm not sure which I should study -
Would it be better to start with Java or Dreamweaver or is there something else you can recommend.
Many thanks
Helen. |

Helen,
I am not an expert on this, but one former employee did use Dreamweaver, and the work turned out beautifully (it was very professional). Recently I had my small IT group back (one unix and one PC persons) after 5 years, so I will revise an in-house website soon.

Getting back to the original question, All of the words you mention can be categorised depending on their usage.
How is an adverb, conjunction, or noun.
You is a personal pronoun (2nd pers. singular or plural)
A is the indefinite article, it is also a noun, an adjective, a prefix and a suffix. - It is a busy little guy.
Impede is a transitive verb.
disappear is an intransitive verb.
Low is an adjective, an adverb, a verb and a noun. |
