The girlfriend of a guy was already in the university of Maryland. He wanted to go there too, but his score on SAT was too low to get in.

It does... Then definitely it is a metaphor. At the very least, he is saying that SAT took his girlfriend away from him. There might be an additional meaning that since they are apart, the chances are good that she will fall for some guy at UM. |
