The Derby is a famous flat horse race in Britain - it takes place near a town called Epsom, not far from London. The race was first run in 1780. It is named after the 12th Earl of Derby, one of the two people who organised the first race.
Queen Elizabeth the Second (the British Queen) is very keen on horses (she owns some of her own racehorses), and normally goes to the Derby. She also goes to the "Royal Ascot" races later in June (this event is part of the story of "My Fair Lady", and is as famous for the fashion of the ladies who go to watch as for the races themselves!)
