Dear teachers:

We give preference to applicants with some experience.

Could "preference" be replaced with "priority"?

Thanks.

Yes, however it changes the meaning slightly and makes the statement a little stronger.

"We give preference to applicants with some experience."
We will look at everybody's application, but we prefer to hire someone with experience. We MIGHT hire someone without experience if their resume is exceptioanlly good (like a quality education), but not likely.

"We give priority to applicants with some experience."
We will look at the applications of people with experience first, then other people later if we have time. And if anyone has experience, they will definitely get the job over anyone without experience no matter how good their resume or education.

Thanks Bob. Could I use "first priority', "second priority", "third priority", etc. to state the importance among people or things in sequence?
