What does *put up* mean?

because "put" has many many meanings, it's a basic verb.
to put up can mean sth like "to hang up" "to built/construct" "to tolerate" .. and "to put up a fight" means something like "to fend" , "to fight back".
so when you're attacked then you usually don't go away but *put up a fight* --> you fight back.

am i right?
