For example, Americans often suggest OK with their thumb and forefinger touched to form a circle. The gesture means money to *the* Japanese, zero to the French, and a bad word to Brazilians.

Grammatically not necessary, but it's common usage to clarify you are talking about the people as opposed to the language. |
