2. He suffered fatal injuries when he was thrown from the car on impact.
Which is correct?

Both are correct, depending on the situation (yeah, one of those wierd grammar situations again):

Maybe the car crashed, maybe it did not and he just fell out for some reason, but in any case he was injured when his body came to a sudden stop against the pavement or tree or wall or whatever.

The car definitely crashed, and the car came to a sudden stop. The sudden stop threw him from the car. Either being thrown (through the windshield) or the sudden impact on the pavement/wall/tree/whatever caused his injuries. |

And so confusing! Move a preposition from this part of a sentence to that part, and your meaning changes completely.
