I don't really understand the meaning of the essay topic:
"What professions possess a strong, inner, phychological dimension as well as an external, concrete one? write an essay that describes a field of endeavor that requires both dimensions."
Can anybody help? thanks! |

To be honest, Dan, it sounds like gobbledygook to me. It must be a college course such as sociology. They use a lot of big words and complicated sentences to make it sound like they're expressing something besides plain common sense.
I'd pick almost any of the helping professions, though (doctor, nurse, teacher, etc.). You could claim a psychological dimension because they deal with people on an intimate level, while each has a main purpose other than psychology.
Good luck! |

Perhaps it means, what professions require mental toughness as well as physical toughness. But as bud says, it is written in the usual acedemic gobbledegook, that always makes my eyes glaze over and wonder how they got so far up their own a s s e s and can still breathe. |

Thanks for your opinions. Are you in US ?
Actually, I am now studying at college. It is my English essay. Now I am promoted from ESL to regular english class. I found that it is quite difficult for me to adapt to the new learning environment since I am not good at inferring inner meaning of an article.
anyways, today I choose to write about lawyers. In my view, lawyers are always in dilemma situation. For example, even though they know that their clients commit crime, what they need to do is just to find evidence to prove their clients innocence. They don't need to care about their own moral standard or beliefs to judge the misbehavior of the clients since it will affect their emotion to do their job well...I have written something like that in this morning..I don't know whether I touch my essay topic. |

Congratulations, Dan! I can see why you were promoted, as your English writing is wonderful. It sounds like your essay will be a good one, and on topic.
I also like Blossoms suggestion a lot.
And yes, I'm in the U.S. |

Yeah, strangely worded question.
My interpretation is that it is asking for a job/profession that requires mental strength but also an outer appearance of mental strength or confidence ("one" refering to phychological dimension).
My first thought was a firefighter. You have to be very brave to rush into a burning house and inspire confidence enough to get survivors to trust you and follow you out.
But a lawyer, eh? I hadn't thought of that, but I concur. They must have the outward appearance of confidence to be able to lie with a straight face and sway a jury. |

Dan, how long have you been in the U.S.? What area of the country are you in? How are you dealing with all the cultural changes?.. Sorry, but I don't know of any other good forums. However, Dave's ESL Cafe has many other forums not directly related to English. Have you seen any of them?
Great comment about lawyers, Bob! I like to call them lieyers. |

I'm in the greater New York City area. It's a good place because we have people here from just about every country in the world. I like the mix of cultures. Good luck in your studies! |
