I think we use "believe" when it concerns a fact that is either true or not. There may not be a way to prove it, but we may believe that it is true or believe that it is false.
Ex.: Billy said he did his reading assignment, but I don't believe him. He can't answer any questions about it.
We use "believe in" when we are talking about concepts. Usually there is no right or wrong, but we are stating which side of the "issue" we hold to.
Ex.: Many people today believe in alternative medical treatments, such as herbal therapy and aroma therapy. |
