Dear teachers:

Since the image reading device lacks a cover and a light guide, it could not transmit the light efficiently.

Rewrite:
(a) Since lacking a cover and a light guide, the image reading device could not transmit the light efficiently.
(b) Lacking a cover and a light guide, the image reading device could not transmit the light efficiently.

Are (a) and (b) correct?

The second is good, but the first isn't. With a small edit (Since it is lacking...), it would be correct.
