Hi there,

I am a career counselor in California and am currently working with a 28 year old woman originally from Taiwan. We have been working on preparing her for job interviewing.

She says that she finds it hard to talk about more than one topic at once - that her American friends go from topic to topic but she feels more comfortable talking about one thing at a time. She feels uncomfortable about her ability to carry-on an 'american style conversation' because of this and concerned that she may come across as stand-offish in an interview.

My suggestions to cultural differences is simply to keep practicing the new behavior until it becomes natural. Anyone have any personal experience and other advice to share about learning a new style of communication?

thanks in advance!

She's right. American communication style is more chatty and free-flowing (even with complete strangers) than East Asian style. It can actually seem rude if you are not used to it.
She does just need practice for experience, and remember not to take anything too personal.
