Please help me explain. I don't know what 'to'(underlined) means.

'He invited Liz to join his family on a day trip to his home village about 60 kilometers to the north of HN.'

Thanks.

This can be used when describing a distance travelled.
For example. I ran to the shop. (covering a distance)
It kind of means "towards" as well

I don't understand this sentence too.Is that his home village on their way somewhere to the north of HN?
Or from the north of NH they have to go 60 kilometers to reach the home village?
Thanks!

It (to the) is an expression used sometimes when describing geographical relationships. Lake George is 50 miles to the north of Albany. It might be a bit archaic, and it isn't necessary. (At least, in these two sentences it can be eliminated with no change in meaning.)

He invited Liz to join his family on a day trip to his home village about 60 kilometers north of HN.

Lake George is 50 miles north of Albany.

Does the quote have the same meaning as:
Lake George is 50 miles away from north of Albany.

Thanks.

That doesn't quite work, River. You could change it to, "Lake George is 50 miles away from Albany, to the north" where "to the north" is added as clarification.
