If it is accidental, then you bounce a check. Embarassed
If it is intentional, then you kite a check, and it is illegal fraud. Evil or Very Mad

I often wrote bad checks, because I always forgot to put enough money in my checking account. That's I didn't want to.

You might just be bad at personal finance bookkeeping (forgetting how much you put in and take out).
Sometimes it is accidental because the money you deposit is not entered into the bank's computer records for your account fast enough before the check you write against the deposit "clears" to deduct the money from your account.

For example, say I have $300 in my account. I get a paycheck of $1000 from the company home office in another state. I deposit the check, so I think I have $1300 in my account. But it is an out-of-state check, so it doesn't clear for 2 weeks. I write a check to pay $500 for rent. It is a local check, so it clears in 3 days. I think I am fine, but according to the bank's records, I still only have $300, so the $500 check I write will bounce. Embarassed

I have a dear friend who keeps two checking accounts to reduce the risk of bouncing a check. She uses one this month, and the other next month, giving the first "a chance to rest." Otherwise, she's completely normal. I swear! Laughing
