Just a guess:

They were making a movie of Catcher in the Rye and offered Fraser the part of some character other than Holden. He wanted to play Holden, so he declined that part, telling the director that he would play the part of Holden if they offered that. (He might not have declined the other part, but at least he told them he needed a fair amount of time to think about it.)

However, the context could change that guess.
