He realized that being a superhero isn't all *cracked up* to be.
Could anyone explain that?

in your example, it means that being a superhero was not only what you see in the comics. it's hard, demanding, secretive, lonely...

new example - liz thought that being a director of the play at her school would allow her to become famous at her school. her name would be on all of the posters and publicity that would be posted all over the school, as well as in her local newpaper, local tv program, and billboards around her small town. liz had no idea how much work she would have to put into the play...she had more jobs than she could do by herself and it became a very stressful job before the day of the production arrived! you could say that liz being the director of the school play was not all that she thought it was cracked up to be.
