Can *peephole* and *porthole* mean the same thing?
I've seen porthole used as peephole.
Thanks |

a porthole is a small, round window on the side of a large boat or ship.
a peephole usually refers to a small hole that is made in a wall between rooms to peek at someone or something...very sneaky.
for example, a peephole from the boys locker room at school into a girls locker rom at school so the boys can watch the girls shower or change clothes. you can see this in 1980's movies Porky's, Animal House (i think), Fasttimes at Ridgemont High...
...correct me if i'm wrong about those movies, bud or bob s. iitimone7 |

Porky's used a peephole. I don't remember one used in any scene in Animal House or Fasttimes (though it has been a few years since I've seen those). I only remember Belushi using a ladder to peek in the window. And in Revenge of the Nerds, they simply installed cameras.
You can also install a peephole in a door to see who is there before opening it. |
