Hi all...

Can somebody please give me the description/definition/usage of ASSUME and PRESUME and some examples of when you can and cannot use each?

Many thanks in advance.

Assume. You assume when you take or accept something to be true without any proof, for the sake of argument or action.
I assumed he was a burglar because he was in my back yard, so I shot him.
You can also assume office. This means you begin to carry out the duties of the office.
The new mayor has been sworn in, and will assume office today.

Presume. Suppose to be true, take for granted.

Dr. Livingston, I presume?, is a well-known use of it.
I presume Stanley took it for granted that it was Livingstone, because he was the only white man in that part of Africa at the time.
If you disappear for 7 years you can legally be, presumed dead.
