Horking often is used to describe the noisy (and unpleasant) way of clearing one's throat before spitting. It is often spelled HAWK.
There used to be signs in buses and public toilets in England saying NO HAWKING OR SPITTING.
There are campaigns in China today, especially in Beijing, to try and dissuade the local people from hawking, a very common and very unpleasant habit. For many years the Chinese believed that devils existed in their throat and it was necessary to clear them out. Sadly, the campaign has had only limited success and many Chinese (Taxi drivers in particular) still hawk noisomely.
If you look up the word in slang dictionaries you will find the word hork is used many ways, including vomitting. |
