A man with a *five o'clock shadow* said sadly.

Why *five o'clock*?

Thanks

A man shaves in the morning and goes off to work clean and smooth.
5 o'clock is the standard end of the workday when he leaves the office. By then, his whiskers have partially grown back, the dark facial hair appearing like a slight shadow across his face.

Most people understand the meaning of the term "five-o'clock shadow," and it is as Bob explained, but when did it originate? I have searched high and low and have been unable to come up with an answer.

It was certainly used some years ago in an advertisement by Gilette who said that their razors shaved so close that you could avoided the five o'clock shadow, but I do not think they invented the phrase.
