Is this dance well-known your country? Is this dish well-know in your country? Is this and that well-known in your country? Those are examples of questions that are from out of curiosity. And or something in a question is just a phrase that people using to ask a question in an informal way. I don't think anyone would think that line was an unfriendly line since it was a quesition out of curiosity. I was asking a question about something I didn't know and would like to know. But it's funny that you said it sounds unfriendly. I wonder if it's you who think it's not friendly or people out there who think it is  .
