*History is seldom as tangible as it is now*: May 8 is the 60th anniversary of the end of the Second World War.
I don't quite understand that

Here's just a wild guess:
When people think of "History", they think of the big events of the past that shaped the world. But those events are usually so far in the past, they have no real connection to our lives today: all the people involved are now long dead, the cities vanished into dust, the tools or weapons used are now just archaeological nick-knacks in museums, and so on.
But WWII is more "tangible" in that we can still reach out and touch the things and people who were directly involved. It was a big event in history (schools will teach about it for hundreds of years to come), and we can actually talk to the people who were there and directly involved, who personally witnessed the horrors.
How does that sound? |
