Is it absolutely necessary to say

I found some packages with white stuff IN THEM


or is it - to some extent - acceptable to say

I found some packages with white stuff in it?

"Packages" is plural, so would use "them."

I found a package with white stuff in it.
I found some packages with white stuff in them.
