Hello everyone.

The dialogue below is from an English-conversation program broadcast today on the NHK radio in Japan.

Kumi: What time is the performance on Saturday?
Concierge: There are two performances, a matinee and an evening performance.

For a comprehension check of this part, the following question was asked afterward.
How many performances are there on Saturday?

One of the three alternatives given, which the instructor said was the right answer, was:
One performance in the afternoon and another one in the evening.

In the case above, shouldnt the correct answer have been something like:
One performance in the afternoon and the other in the evening.?

Best regards,
Fw

Hi Fw,

The question should have been "How many performances were there on Saturday?"

The answer was correct because they are the same performance (the same show). Your answer would have been correct if there were two different shows.

Thank you for your reply, Lotus.

But the question given in the radio program is:
"How many performances are there on Saturday?"

To me this sounds very natural, because they perform the show at the theater every Saturday.

Hi fw,

Now the answer is different.

From the your original transcribed post, I did not infer that the shows are on every Saturday. If that is true, then your answer is correct.

The question is still wrong and should have been "How many performances are there on saturdays?"
