I have always categorized 4 types of soldiers (not officers)
1) Actually joined to help out
2) Joined due to being extemely patriotic
3) Joined cause they like guns and feeling powerful
4) Joined cause they are morons who couldn't even work in McDonald's

1) Atleast 50% of the soldiers I have met fall into this group, and are obviously good people (women soldiers usually fit this one) following their morals.
2) I feel they are a little too extreme in their thinking (on most issues) but still good people.
3) I believe speaks for itself (I stay far away from this kind)
4) Again, I believe this speaks for itself (though I have met some ESLers who fall here Smile ).

I can only vouch for the Canadian and American militaries though. I am sure it's the same in most others (except where there is mandatory service).

I guess you would make a #5, but I don't think there are enough people who would make me create another category in my mind. I don't even go close to Itaewon!!! BTW, congrats on the baby girl Smile

We hear a lot of good things of the american soldiers.
I life in the netherlands, and my dad is a soldier too. He has to go to Iraq in April next year, for 6 months.
The leader sayed that it is ''save'' ( not really save ofcourse ) there, but is that really true?
I don't thing so... Confused

so you think that there's nothing going to happen when he's ther?
I really hope so, because we saw a lot of tapes with people who got seized and keep hostage Sad .
That's what makes me a little bit afraid.
But I hope you are right.

a little question: You are not in the army anymore, right? why not?
Because I'm thinking Of what I've to do, when I've finished my school,
( in may next year)
And maybe I would like to do the same things as my Father, But I'm not sure... Because I want to know the good and the bad sides of the army.
maybe you could tell me some.

greets Monique
