Hello everyone.

The following is a short paragraph that one of my friends wrote.

In order to save natural resources and keep the environment clean, we usually separate our garbage into three types. The first type is ( ) that can be burned. This type includes wastepaper and kitchen garbage. The second type is ( ) that cannot be burned. This type contains, for example, plastic wrapping and broken dishes. The last type is ( ) that can be recycled. Among the items in this group are newspapers, metal cans, and bottles. We separate these things so that we can live, what is often called, an eco-friendly life.

For the blanks above, which is the most appropriate, #1 or #2?
1. garbage
2. the garbage

Best regards,
fw

In my opinion, either is acceptable.

I agree with David, but to me just "garbage" is more common.
