In 1791 Robert Carter III, one of the wealthiest plantation owners in Virginia, stunned his family, friends, and neighbors by filing a deed of emancipation, setting free the more than 500 slaves who were legally considered his property.

In 1791 Robert Carter III, one of the wealthiest plantation owners in Virginia, stunned his family, friends, and neighbors by filing a deed of emancipation, and set free the more than 500 slaves who were legally considered his property

The meaning does change with the "and set free" added. The original context ties the filing with the freeing tightly. (They would not have been free without the signing of the papers. By saying "and set free" it makes the two events less closely tied - related but there is now a possiblity that the two events are independant of each other which is not the orginial, and histroical, context.

Hope that helps - Kristi
