HELP! In the following paragraphs are the underlined words adverbs because they modify the adjective or are they just adjectives because they modify the original nouns albeit in a different way than the primary adjective?

Eric told Jesi that in her niece's painting, the big yellow circle is the sun. The straight black lines are roads, the small brown boxes are cars, and the big purple square is a truck.

The sun isn't just a yellow circle, it�s a big yellow circle. The black lines are straight black lines. The brown boxes are small brown boxes, and the purple square is a big purple square.

please advise. Is this just a writers call or are these rules hard and fast.

Hi Shainy,

The underlined words cannot be adverbs because they do not modify the verb. They are part of consecutive adjectives modifying a noun.
