answer - are listening
is LISTEN also correct?
2) Benjamin, _____________ to me?
answer - are you listening.
is DO YOU LISTEN also correct?
3) What __________ about right now?
answer - are you thinking
is DO YOU THINK also correct
4) What book _________ at the moment?
answer - are you reading
is DO YOU READ also correct

As a native speaker (US accent) I would say #1 and #4 are NO, and #2 could sound correct and #3 I see no problem at all. I can't say if they are grammatically correct or not, but that is how they sound to me. |

The problem here is verb tenses. Remember:
regular present tense is for things that are facts, that are generally true, that happen regularly.
Present continuous is for specific actions happening "right now"
So:
They are listening to music on the radio. (At this moment, they are listening)
They listen to music on the radio. (Generally/frequently/every day they listen to the radio)
What are you thinking about right now? (correct)
What do you think about right now? (incorrect! "think" in the present tense is for actions "in general" or that happen frequently. Therefore, "at this moment" or "right now" can never go with the simple present. |
