Hi there,

I came by with these two sentences that looks bewilderingly similar. Tell me what are the possible differences?

1) How long have you had you dog?
2) How long did you have your dog?

Thank you always.

"How long have you had your dog?" means you have a dog now. If the answer is "four years," for example, it means you got the dog four years ago.

"How long did you have your dog?" means you don't have a dog now. If the answer is "four years," for example, it means you owned the dog for four years in the past, but I don't know which four years.
