D O U L O V E J A P A N ?
I am a teacher for high school kids here in Japan. I as a nonnative speaker of English, would like to know the correct answer.
His old fishing rod reminded him of the last time he had gone fishing, eight years (back/before/ago), with Mary.
Which would be a correct word to put in ( )?
(My guessing is that "back" and "before" would be....Right?)

Hi Satoru,
High school students are a tough crowd.
I would go with "ago", replace "had gone" with "went", put Mary closer to "fishing", and cut out one comma.
His old fishing rod reminded him of the last time he went fishing with Mary, eight years ago.

Yes, they always sort of give me lots of subtle quesitons which I sometimes find difficult to answer.
So... I can't put "before" in this sentence, can I???
