Hello everyone.

I rewrote the second sentence in the following passage into Sentences #1, #2 and #3 below. Does each sentence make sense and are they grammatically correct?

Quote:
We went to Tokyo yesterday to watch a baseball game between the US major leaguers and the Japanese All Stars. We left Nagoya at eleven oclock in the morning, and arrived at Tokyo Station at one oclock in the afternoon.

1. Leaving Nagoya at eleven oclock in the morning, we arrived at Tokyo Station at one oclock in the afternoon.
2. We, leaving Nagoya at eleven oclock in the morning, arrived at Tokyo Station at one oclock in the afternoon.
3. We left Nagoya at eleven oclock in the morning, arriving at Tokyo Station at one oclock in the afternoon.

Best regards,
fw

Hi fw,

#1 and #3 are fine. #2 is incorrect. You can see that you used "we" only once in each sentence, which is correct. However, the "we" in sentence #2 is awkward because of its placement and separation by the comma.

#1 has an understood "after" before it. The clause modifies "arrived."

After leaving Nagoya at eleven oclock in the morning, we arrived at Tokyo Station at one oclock in the afternoon.

The same can be said of #2.

We, after leaving Nagoya at eleven oclock in the morning, arrived at Tokyo Station at one oclock in the afternoon.

Here, the "we" is simply way too far from the verb "arrived." That's why it's awkward and should not be used.

#3 is correct because "we" is immediately before the main verb "left." The "arriving.." subordinate clause modifies "left."
