Six huge, heavy women, who gave themselves motivating sayings all the time!

I would correct this sentences as follows:
Six huge, heavy women, who were cheering each other on all the time!

Would you agree with me or is there something closer to the first sentence?

I'm looking forward to getting a native speaker's answer.

I'm assuming you're speaking of athletes.

The six women athletes cheered and motivated each other all the time.
