Hello everyone.

The term "global standard" has recently been used among Japanese. Some people around me say the term is an artificial Japlish, not proper English, term. If it is, should it be replaced by the term "international standard" or something?

Best regards,

fw

Hi fw,

A global standard doesn't belong to any country by definition.

A country may have initiated the setting of a standard. But, once it is set and accepted as a global standard, it no longer belongs to any country.

As you might surmise, there are very few accepted global standards. One might be the metric system. Another might be the GMT time system. Another might be the periodic table. Currency is certainly not global (perhaps by comparison only). Even the ubiquitous quality standard ISO 9000 is not global. It is not as widely accepted as people think.

The phrase global standard is used in the U.S. But like other countries, it is usually a phrase of vanity and not reality.
