| In most industrialized nations, the usual response to the afternoon sag in energy is to try to jump-start the system with caffeine, a tactic that sleep experts say is actually counter-productive, creating only the illusion of efficiency and alertness and depriving the body and brain of much-meeded sleep. |
question1: I think that 'and' must be added in front of 'a tactic'.
What do you think of my opinion?
question2: Can you paraphrase 'a tactic that sleep experts say is actually counter-productive, creating only the illusion of efficiency and alertness and depriving the body and brain of much-meeded sleep.'? |

Question 1) No, you don't need to put "and" in front of "a tactic". That would cause ambiguity in the meaning. "And" is a conjunction so it unites two different ideas, two different expressions, two differen clauses, two different sentences etc....however in this case the part between the two commas is just an explanation to the tactic referred in the first part of the sentence. So they are already linked, you do not have to link them again.
You can say sth like "which is a tactic..." but not "and a tactic"...
Question 2) Well it says that the tactic of jump-starting the system with caffeine prevents the body and the brain from getting enough sleep, which is required for an efficient performance, but keeps the person awake via an artificial sense of awareness. Therefore, since it is only an artificial alertness, it does not boost productivity but only reduces it...if that's what you asked:) _________________ born to lose, losing to live, living to die... |
