|

I'd like to know the meaning of 'stub out' in the following contexts.
1.Signs across the entrances warn all visitors to stub out their cigarettes.
2.For four decades, tobacco giants Philip Morris and R.J. Reynolds have hotly denied that cigarettes cause illness and have successfully stubbed out every claim for damages brought against them.
And also I wonder which meaning is the more common between the two.
Thanks. |

The first means to butt out, put out, discard the cigarette.
The second means that they have defeated any lawsuits, court challenges seeking money for damages caused by smoking |
