Hello everyone.

Are both, #1 and #2 below, appropriate for each blank in the following sentences?

(A) As the basketball game ( ), we are getting more and more excited.
1. is going
2. is going on

(B) The basketball game started. As the game ( ), the spectators got more and more excited.
1. went
2. went on

Answer number 2 is correct for both A and B. "To go on" is an idiom that means to continue. Answer number 1 is incorrect because it implies that the basketball game is moving to a new location, which doesn't make any sense in this context.
