Well, it depends.
It rained cats and dogs for three days last week is correct if that is the end of that part of the story.
But if you want to talk about what happened in the third day of rain, you could say:
It had been raining cats and dogs for three days when all of a sudden, I saw water rushing into my kitchen.
You would use had been raining because it happened continuously for a period of time before something else in the past (I saw water come into my house). |
