Hello everyone.
The following is a question from the unified entrance examination in English for the applicants of public high schools in Tokyo.
Read the passage and answer the question in English. (The passage has been adapted. For the original, see pp.8-10 at http://www.kyoiku.metro.tokyo.jp/press/pr060223kensa/mondai_eigo.pdf)
One summer, Jennifer was asked by her big brother Bill to take some children to a lake in the mountains with him to hike. Jennifer didnt think it would be difficult, so she said yes. One day Jennifer and Bill took twelve children to a lake in the mountains.
After walking about an hour, a little girl in the group said, I dont want to walk any more. Then a boy fell down and cried for a while. She held his hand and waited for a while before he stopped crying. Then another girl said, I dont like that boy. He said a very bad thing to me. She had to listen to her for about ten minutes. And then another boy said, Im hungry. I want to eat my lunch here. Those four children were a little younger than the other children in the group. Jennifer wanted to be kind to them, but it was hard to do so because they made so much trouble.
While they were walking, Jennifer asked the four children about their schools, friends, and families. They began to talk with Jennifer. She listened to them and asked more questions. Jennifer and the four children laughed a lot. They had become good friends before they came back to the village in the evening.
The four children were very tired. But all of them were happy. Jennifer was happy, too.
Question: What was hard for Jennifer when the four children made so much trouble?
Is each below grammatically correct and appropriate as an answer to this question and?
1. To be kind to them was.
2. It was hard to be kind to them.
3. It was hard to be kind to the four children.
Best regards,
