I would use divide. Both words mean to give out portions, but divide implies that there is a deliberate plan to share equally.
From dictionary.com: "These verbs mean to give out in portions or shares. Distribute is the least specific: The government distributed land to settlers. Divide implies giving out portions, often equal, on the basis of a plan or purpose: The estate will be divided among the heirs."
For your information, although divide is the best choice for a group, two people will often agree to share the cost. When dining out, two people may decide to split the bill. In this case each will pay one half of the final charge.
