To hope for something means that there could be a possibility of it happening. To wish usually means that it is not a possibility but it is something you would like to happen or have if it could be possible. The two words are sometimes used in the same manner but, strictly speaking, this is the real meaning of the two.
For instance:
I hope he comes tonight - there is a possibility that he may.
I wish he would come tonight - there is no indication that he will, the person would like him to though. |
