Hello again,

How can we complete the following sentence: But they...................... arrived home safely??? Is it ok to use fortunately? Or perhaps we should stick to finally or eventually??

Best regards
Haruki

They all are okay. You could even use "never" Wink.

Think about word order though:

but they finally/eventually arrived home safely.

Adverbials of time or frequency usually take their place between the subject and the verb in a sentence. You could start the sentence with these words too as well as the word fortunately:

but fortunately/finally/eventually they arrived home safely.

If there was concern about a safe arrival and you wish to use fortunately it would be best to say it this way:

But fortunately they arrived home safely.

Example:

The icy roads had made driving dangerous, but fortunately they arrived home safely.
