Is there a difference between *hear about* and *hear of*?

They mean the same thing, MsD.

I'd guess that you could always replace "hear of" with "hear about," but I don't think the reverse is true. That's just my intuition, though, not a knowing, and unfortunately, I can't think of a way to explain when "hear of" works well.
