I believe you mentioned that you use "A Practical English Grammar," by Thomson and Martinet.
If you turn to Clauses of Concession in that book (Section 340 on page 299) it says that may + an infinitive can be used in hypothetical cases. It gives as an example: However frightened you may be yourself, you must remain outwardly calm. |
