1.Into cyberspace I went, stacked up against cleavage and chiseled bodies and exposed, exposed, exposed flesh.

Question Why is it "Into cyberspace I went,.."? Is it an inverted structure? Does it also mean " I went into cyberspace,..."

Question How does "..., stacked up...." come from? Why is it "stacked"? Does it mean passive voice or what?

2.The body builderadmired his chiseled abs.

Question What does abs. mean here?

Thanks a lot.

Yes, it means the same thing, but it is not inverted. To be inverted, the subject must follow the verb, which in this case it doesn't. "Into cyberspace" is a prepositional phrase, and prepositional phrases can be placed almost anywere in a sentence. Maybe someone else can elaborate on this some more for me.

Its not passive, because to be passive, it must have a form of the auxilary verb to be. The reason it is past tense is because "I went" is past tense, so it is just a matter of subject-verb agreement.

Abs is short for the Abdominal muscles, which are the muscles between the chest and pelvis, generally speaking.

Hope this helps! Smile

Thank you, pavilion.

However, I still have a question. If "Into cyberspace I went,..." equals "I went into cyberspace, ....", then the sentence can be "I went into cyberspace, stacked up against cleavage and chiseled bodies and exposed, exposed, exposed flesh.". But shouldn't it be "I went into cyberspace, and stacked up against cleavage and chiseled bodies and exposed, exposed, exposed flesh.", because exposed
here only means adjective, not a verb.

Thank you.

Yes, exactly.

No, there would be no and. You could use and, but it would be at the end of the sentence. "I went into cyberspace, stacked up against cleavage and chiseled bodies and exposed, exposed, exposed flesh, and...". The "stacked up against ...flesh" part is a non-restrictive part and could be removed and the sentence would still make sense. The sentence is just describing the trip into cyberspace.

Hope this helped. Smile

Thanks for your reply. Surprised

But I have another question, so is "exposed" a verb or a noun here? According to the translation in Chinese, it is a noun. And that's why I thought there must have had been an "and" before "stacked".

Sorry....I always raise one question from another. Sad

Exposed is actually an adjective here. You had it right before. It is describing the flesh as not covered. Expose is never a noun, though. You may be confusing it with expos (note the accent on the e), which is a noun, and means "an exposure or a revelation of something discreditable", or "a formal explanation of facts." Where did you get the translation from?

However, even if it was a noun, that wouldn't constitute an "and" being placed before stacked. The "stacked up..." part is a participle phrase. Those phrases don't start with "and". If you really want to use "and", you can add and was. So it's either nothing or and was, but not just and.

Never be sorry for asking questions. How else are you going to learn if you don't ask questions? Asking questions shows that you are commited to learning, and I have no problem answering your questions! Smile

Hope this helped! Smile

So "Into cyberspace I went, stacked up against cleavage and chiseled bodies and exposed, exposed, exposed flesh." equals "I went into cyberspace, and was stacked up against cleavage and chiseled bodies and exposed, exposed, exposed flesh.".

And "I went into cyberspace, and was stacked up against cleavage and chiseled bodies and exposed, exposed, exposed flesh." changes into "I went into cyberspace, being stacked up against cleavage and chiseled bodies and exposed, exposed, exposed flesh." and "being" can be omitted. So it became " I went into cyberspace, stacked up against cleavage and ...". Is it????
