| Are 'join the conversation' and 'join in the conversation' both in use? Thanks. |

Hi outsider,
There isn't much difference. The difference is that there is a topic implied in the second phrase.
When you join the conversation, you interject (usually invited) and participate in the conversation.
"Sally is usually shy. But, she joined the conversation when she saw her friends there."
When you join in the conversation, you interject, participate and contribute to the topic of the conversation.
"Hey John, we're talking about the Oscar upsets. Want to join in the conversation and give us your opinion?"
