slice of life
realistic portrayal of life: a realistic portrayal of life, especially a harsh or unpleasant life, *e.g. in literature or a movie*
Usually movies aren't realistic, is it talking about books or movies that are different from norm?

It depends on which movies you watch! Many movies and books portray realistic events.
Here's some more information:
A slice of life is an idiomatic expression.
http://idioms.thefreedictionary.com/slice+of+life - An episode of actual experience represented realistically and with little alteration in a dramatic, fictional, or journalistic work. If a film, a play, or a piece of writing shows a slice of life, it shows life as it really is. The drama, a slice of life about a group of unmarried mothers, starts tonight. |
