slouches off - walks away in a slouching posture slouching means not standing up straight, shoulders and head hanging down, feet dragging on the ground. Teenagers often slouch.
Pouting - sulking. If you pout, you have a look on your face that says you feel some injustice has happened against you, that someone has treated you unfairly. Teenagers often pout too!
In that sentence, course means 'course of action'. The best thing to do, the best approach to take.
"I think laying low is the best course." - this means the best thing to do right now is keep quiet and keep out of sight until the problem or danger has passed.
