An experiment is one occurance, one thing that happened.
He conducted an experiment on the physics of force - or whatever.
Experimentation is a more general noun.
However, with problems like this, it's better to think about how you use the words differently, rather than a difference in meaning. I can't think of many contexts where the word 'experimentation,' seems natural. I think we'd be more likely to use 'experimenting,' as a general noun.
By experimenting on rats, he discovered that......
Perhaps we might say "in the process of experimentation / experimenting"
Search a corpus, like the Collins Cobuild, to find examples of actual use by scientists.
